Key Eligibility Criteria

Because this is a streamlined pathway to permanent residency, the threshold for eligibility is exceptionally high. Applicants must demonstrate extraordinary achievements in their field.

✓ International Recognition: You must have an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in an eligible field (such as targeted tech sectors, major business leadership, or elite academia).
✓ National Benefit: You must prove that your settlement in Australia will provide a significant economic, social, cultural, or academic benefit to the country.
✓ Employability: You must have no difficulty obtaining employment, or establishing yourself independently, in your field in Australia.
✓ Nomination: You must be nominated by an eligible Australian citizen, permanent resident, eligible New Zealand citizen, or Australian organisation with a national reputation in your field.

The Process

How the Application Works

The National Innovation Visa is not a direct-apply visa. It operates on an invitation basis:

✓ Step 1 (Expression of Interest): You must first submit a detailed Expression of Interest (EOI) outlining your achievements, evidence of national benefit, and nominator details.
✓ Step 2 (Invitation): If your EOI is successful and aligns with government priorities, you will receive an invitation to apply for the visa.
✓ Step 3 (Visa Application): Once invited, you must lodge the formal visa application, complete with comprehensive supporting evidence, health, and character checks.

Strategic Approach for Entrepreneurs and Investors

Former eligibility for closed programs like the 188 or 132 visas does not guarantee success under the National Innovation visa. Merely having investment funds or running a standard business is no longer sufficient. Your application must clearly articulate a compelling narrative of innovation, exceptional talent, and targeted national benefit.
